Just because Cocke County placed the Ten Commandments in their courthouse last week does not mean it's a sure bet for Monroe County.

"We are continuing to give the matter further study given the recent developments in Cocke County. But, no final decisions have been made," said Monroe County Mayor Tim Yates.

On Sept. 24, Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes placed the Ten Commandment on display in the county's courthouse, accompanied in a frame by copies of the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. Unlike Monroe County, however, Cocke County never had to remove the Ten Commandments from its courthouse. This is the first time the religious document has even been displayed there.

"Cocke County got to put theirs up," said Yates. "But we haven't been given the go ahead from the county [County Commission] to proceed with it here."

In June, Yates announced that the Ten Commandments would be placed in the Monroe County Courthouse again as part of a historical documents display.
