BRANDON KEYS Sports Editor College athletic departments can
sometimes be the face of the schools they represent. College sports
allow the community and alumni to take pride in their school. Four
years ago, Hiwassee College had to face hard times, not only in the
athletic department, but as a whole. Now as the 2012 school year
approaches, the Tigers feel they're on the right track. So does
Hiwassee athletic director Rodney Nelson.
The Tigers moved from the junior
college ranks to the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic
Association) in 2008. Since then the level of competition facing
Hiwassee has increased. Nelson says they have welcomed the challenges
of competing as a four-year school. "We play as an independent.
