A Monroe County inmate and the woman who helped him escape last fall have been indicited by the Monroe County Grand Jury.

Christopher Chittum, 41, and Samantha Lee Stafford, 26, were both indicted on escape charges.

Chittum escaped from the Monroe County Jail after Stafford reportedly picked Chittum up outside the jail and took off Nov. 12.

The couple was found when Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Jennifer Bledsoe received a phone tip saying Chittum and Stafford were in Charleston, South Carolina.

The sheriff's office contacted the Charleston Police and dispatch center and transmitted photos of the individuals, Bledsoe said.

South Carolina Officers were dispatched to a local business in Charleston where Chittum and Stafford were identified and detained.  Chittum and Stafford had obtained false identification indicating that Chittum was an individual named "Bud Stafford."

Bledsoe said witnesses have stated Stafford was the one parked behind the waiting to pick Chittum up.

Chittum had been serving Tennessee Department of Corrections time on charges of Criminal Simulation, Forgery, Theft of Property, and Violation of Probation.

Chittum was working as a trustee cleaning the jail when Stafford allegedly picked him up.

Both have status hearings scheduled for Feb. 22.
