Vonore aldermen give department updates

Published: 10:21 AM, 03/15/2010 Last updated: 10:30 AM, 03/15/2010

The following department reports were presented at the Vonore Mayor and Aldermen meeting Tuesday, March 9.
Police Department
Alderman John Hammontree introduced the new police chief, Randy Kirkland, who was sworn in Feb. 15. Kirkland will be on a 90-day probation and after that a recommendation will be made regarding his permanent position as chief.
Kirkland commended the Vonore officers saying, "They are a really hard-working group of police officers. They have respected me very well."
The new chief said he had been told morale among the officers is higher than it has been in a long time. Mayor Larry Summey said he had also noticed an improvement in morale.
Mack Williams, who had been serving as interim chief, has been named assistant chief and detective.

Public Works
Alderman Mike Garren reported 92 manholes had been repaired and the town is seeing a difference in the amount of storm runoff entering the sewer system. This should reduce the amount the town must pay Tellico Area Services System for wastewater treatment.
Garren said next month he will present an ordinance that will help the town collect past due bills and the board will discuss sewer rates.

Fire Department
Alderman Hamp Brown reported there will be a fundraiser for the volunteer firemen on May 22.

Parks and Recreation
Alderman Dave Evans reported there had been a cleanup day on March 6 at the ballfields.
He also recommended April 3 - 10 be declared cleanup week for the town. The board approved the request.

Mayor's report
Summey reported the town has received five part-time workers through a program the East Tennessee Human Resources Agency has that helps senior citizens find jobs.
The next Vonore town meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13.
