The Sweetwater Wildcats looked to their bench on Tuesday night to get two big performances that helped the Cats beat archrival Loudon 62-52 on Senior Night. With regular starters Gavyn Davis and Jimiese McDermott out for the game against the Redskins, Jahmarus Brewster and Curtis Badiu stepped up in a big way to help Sweetwater take its sixth win in its last nine games.
Brewster, who scored the winning bucket in the final seconds against Sequoyah on Friday, scored all 12 of his points in the first half while Badiu scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats hold off a late charge by the Redskins. Sweetwater improves to 10-11 overall and remains 5-1 in District 5-AA.
Seth Woodby was the lone senior on the Wildcats' roster and got the start in his final home game. But it was junior Corey Billingsley that got the Wildcats off to a quick start, scoring the first of his 33 points just 18 seconds into the contest.
Loudon sandwiched two field goals, the second of which was a 3-pointer, around another Billingsley bucket to take their only lead of the game at 5-4 midway through the first quarter. But Billingsley answered with a 3-pointer of his own and Sweetwater finished the quarter by outscoring Loudon 9-5 to take a 13-10 lead after one quarter.
The teams matched each other shot-for-shot for the first half of the second quarter, but the Wildcats caught fire late and went on an 8-3 run to take a 25-19 lead with 1:47 remaining before halftime. Brewster scored six of the points in that span and added two more before the half. The Redskins didn't go into the half quietly, though, draining two 3-pointers to pull within two points at 27-25.
The lead was cut to just one point after Loudon hit a free throw to begin the second half, but seven straight Billingsley points and a Kurt Woodby three-point play stretched the lead back to 11 points at 37-26. Billingsley added three more free throws and Loudon one before the end of the quarter to leave the Wildcats ahead 40-27 with one period to play. Both teams struggled offensively to begin the fourth quarter, but Loudon cut the lead to single digits with 4:41 to play as part of a 9-4 run in the middle stages of the quarter.
But that's when Badiu showed up, keeping the Sweetwater lead right around 10 points for the remainder of the game as he scored eight of his nine points in the final 3:59 of the game. Badiu was 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in that stretch and also added two field goals goals as Sweetwater closed out the game and took the big non-district win.
Kurt Woodby finished the game with three points and Joey Raby added five. Billingsley just missed a double double, finishing with nine rebounds. The Wildcats have a big opportunity in front of them on Friday night when they travel to Meigs County for a 7:30 p.m. game.
With a win, the Wildcats would guarantee themselves at least a share of the District 5-AA regular season title. The Wildcats finish the regular season next week at McMinn County on Tuesday night and at Polk County on Feb. 12.
