The Sweetwater Lady Wildcats looked to have a big upset in line against the Loudon Lady Redskins on Tuesday night. But scoring droughts and missed opportunities doomed the Lady Cats as they fell 59-26 on Senior Night.
Sweetwater hung with Loudon throughout the first quarter, but were outscored 14-4 in the second period and 35-13 in the second half. The loss drops Sweetwater to 4-15 overall but the Lady Cats remain at 2-4 in District 5-AA. Neither team found much success on the offensive end early in the game, but the Lady Redskins struck first with a field goal just over a minute into action.
Shea Ervin answered just a few seconds later with a three-point play to give Sweetwater its first lead of the game, but Loudon surged ahead 5-3 with three straight points. Back-to-back field goals by Ervin and Rachel Thomasson put Sweetwater ahead once more before a Loudon 3-pointer gave the Lady Redskins control once again.
Allie Bowden's bucket with 2:26 remaining in the quarter gave the Lady Cats a 9-8 edge, but the Lady Redskins took the lead for good 30 seconds later with a bucket and were ahead 10-9 after one period.
But that's where the wheels fell off for the Lady Cats as two Bowden field goals were all Sweetwater could muster in the second quarter while Loudon added 14 points to its total to take a 24-13 lead at halftime. The Lady Cats started the second half on a high note, forcing a five-second violation on the throw-in to start the third quarter.
However, the Lady Cats couldn't take advantage and Loudon opened the second half on a 12-2 run to up its lead to 36-15. Katie Thomasson and Bowden scored back-to-back late in the third quarter, but the Lady Redskins ended the quarter with a 3-pointer and held a 39-19 lead at the end of three quarters. Bowden and Katie Thomasson combined to hit three free throws to start the final quarter, but Loudon countered with a three-point play.
From that point, it was all Loudon as the Lady Redskins went on a 14-0 run before Katie Thomasson scored Sweetwater's last two points with 1:20 remaining in the game. Loudon scored the last three points of the game to produce the final score.
Bowden led the way for Sweetwater with 13 points while Katie Thomasson finished with six, Ervin recorded five, and Rachel Thomasson rounded out the scoring with two points. Sweetwater plays at Meigs County on Friday at 6 p.m.
