County Commission approves budget amendments, committee appointments

The County Commission approved the following at its Jan. 31 meeting:
The appointments of Dr. Chris Shamblin and Joe Saffles on the Health Board. They replace Dr. Wendy Saint Robbins and Jim Wilson. Wilson is retiring after more than 20 years on the board. Dr. Barbara Levin was also appointed to the board.

The appointment of Kyle Holder on the county Planning Commission. He will replace Dave Fankhauser, who resigned.
A resolution asking the state to repeal the "Over-Commitment Law." The law charges a county if it goes over its allotted number of children placed in state custody. In the past the state has paid for the cost of providing for children in state custody.

A resolution from the Sheriff's Office declaring a 2006 Chrysler surplus property. The car will be taken into the county fleet and used by the Tourism Department.
The following budget amendments were approved:
A $56,773 Justice Assistance Program grant the Sheriff's Office received for training and equipment for the Underwater Investigations and Recovery Team.

A $13,811 Justice Assistance Program grant the Sheriff's Office received for training and equipment.
A $94,571.44 Homeland Security grant the Emergency Management Agency received to purchase new radios and pagers for the rural fire departments. Another grant will be received to update the Rescue Squad's communications equipment. This is due to a change in regulations concerning communication equipment for emergency workers.

A $21,000 decrease in the industrial reserve fund to pay for new signs at the Niles Ferry Industrial Park entrances.

A $5,000 Governor's Highway Safety Grant the Sheriff's Office received for supplies and materials.
The next County Commission meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23 at the Courthouse in Madisonville.
