Dr. David Cozzo will give a presentation on "Medicinal and Edible Plants of the Southern Appalachians: Highlights of the Most Prominent Plants" on Sunday, Jan. 31, beginning at 2 p.m. at Sequoyah Birthplace Museum. Admission is free. (Inclement weather date is Feb. 7) For further information call the museum at 423-884-6246.
Dr. David Cozzo's talk will center around some of the most important plants used by the Cherokee; ceremonial and medicinal plants, snakebite remedies, wild foods, and introduced species adopted by the Cherokee. The last part of the talk will introduce the audience to some of the nastiest exotic invasive species and consider their beneficial qualities.
Avi Askey of Overhill Gardens will follow with a short talk on "Management of Invasive Plants and How to Eradicate Them from Your Property." The last part of his discussion will focus on the project now going on at Sequoyah Birthplace Museum of managing foreign invasive plants and support of native plants.
Dr. David Cozzo is the project director for Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources, a grant-making initiative of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. Avi Askey is a second generation nurseryman and started the Overhill Gardens in 1999. He has propagated more than 500 species of native plants and has designed numerous projects in the local community.
