An apparent fight over a woman ended with a man shooting his brother with a high-powered rifle Thursday afternoon.
Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Mike Morgan said Joshua Martin admitted shooting his brother Steven around noon, but said Steven had pulled a knife on him first. Martin told Morgan he and his brother were fighting over a woman when his brother pulled the knife, but instead of attempting to use the knife, he walked out of the house on Old Mill Road.
Morgan said Joshua Martin still grabbed a gun and shot him. Morgan described the gun as being a 30-30 rifle. Steven Martin was hit in the knee. Steven Martin managed to get away from the house and make his way to a gas station nearby. From there 911 was called and he was taken to UT Medical Center by Lifestar.
Morgan said officers searched the area and Steven Martin, but couldn't find a knife. Rural Vale and Coker Creek schools were placed on lockdown during the search as a precautionary measure.
Joshua Martin, 27, Old Mill Road, Tellico Plains, is charged with attempted first-degree murder. As of Friday, Steven Martin was listed in serious condition at UT Medical Center.
