Sequoyah played well for much of their Tuesday night meeting with William Blount but later found themselves the victim of their season-long bugaboo, scoring droughts. Mixed with an unusual number of turnovers those droughts were too much to overcome and the Governors escaped the Chop House with a 68-63 win.
It was the Chiefs seventh loss of the season by six or fewer points. Jethro Griffin led Sequoyah scorers with a game-high 21 points. Griffin collected seven rebounds. Tevin West added 14 points for the Chiefs and Justin Phillips marked the scorebook with a double-double - 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Derrick Atchley tallied six points for the home team, Steven Bledsoe scored five, Lucas Watson and Matt Williams scored two points apiece and A. J. Whited added one point. Micah Ballard topped the Governors with 19 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Ty McBrayer was close behind with 18 points and Zach Seivers joined them in double figures with 10. Tyler McGraw added nine points, Tyler Stinnett and Dylan Keith each tallied five and Pete Kenny scored two points for the Blount County school.
Sequoyah started well with Atchley penetrating for an easy two and adding a free throw on the next trip down the court. Griffin blocked a shot on the defensive end before drilling a three pointer at the other.
This put the Chiefs up 6-2 before Stinnett and McBrayer scored to knot the count. West answered with two and Griffin scored on a soft bank off the glass to put Sequoyah ahead 10-6 with 4:14 left in the period.
Then the bottom fell out for the Chiefs. They committed four turnovers and did not score again in the period. But the Governors kept scoring. McGraw picked up a loose ball and scored then Stinnett and McBrayer hit back-to-back treys. Kenny capped the half with a put-back at the two-second mark and William Blount led 16-10 after one.
A 7-2 run in the first three minutes of the second stanza got the Chiefs even at 23 but the visitors added a trey and a two to go back ahead by five. West answered with a basket, Griffin drove for two and Watson drilled two free throws when fouled on a rebound.
West then completed a two and harm play before McBrayer got two to leave Sequoyah ahead 32-30 at the intermission. The Chiefs led 37-32 after a Bledsoe three at the 6:44 mark of the third before running into another of their all-to-frequent dry spells. The Governors took advantage of the Chiefs inability to score, aided by three turnovers, to take a 41-37 lead.
Atchley aided Griffin for two and West for three and Griffin assisted Phillips to a field goal and the Chiefs had cut their deficit to 46-44 with 2:02 left in the third. William Blount responded with a 9-2 run to take a 55-46 lead with one quarter to play. The Chiefs fought hard throughout the final frame, reducing William Blount's lead to five points on a number of occasions before falling by that same margin.
