The Tellico Plains Lady Bears shook off underwhelming performances in their previous two games and blew out the Berean Christian Lady Eagles 74-28 on Monday night. With the win, Tellico moves to 16-2 overall and more importantly 10-0 in District 3-A.
The Lady Bears can wrap up the regular season district championship tonight with a win over Greenback. That game was moved up from Friday night due to the possibility of snow and ice and it will serve as Tellico's Homecoming. Tellico, who fell to ninth in this week's Class A poll, is the only undefeated team in the district with two games remaining.
All other District 3-A teams have at least two losses in the district. The Lady Bears wasted no time gaining a lead, taking a 12-2 advantage in the game's initial 3:02. The Lady Eagles sandwiched a field goal and free throw around a Sarah McKinnon score, but it was all Tellico for the remainder of the quarter as the Lady Bears finished on a 15-2 run and held a 29-7 lead after the first quarter.
Sheann Cole shook off a recent scoring slump to lead the way for the Lady Bears in the first quarter as she scored 16 of her 30 total points in the quarter. Tellico kept the hammer down on the scoring throttle, opening the second quarter on a 13-3 spurt to take a 42-10 lead with 4:10 left in the first half. But from there, the Lady Bears' offense slowed as Tellico managed only four points over the final half of the second quarter.
The Lady Bears' defense remained solid, though, as Tellico allowed only three points in that span and just six in the quarter to take a 46-13 lead into halftime. The teams played even early in the third quarter, but a 20-2 run to close out the period gave Tellico a 70-19 lead entering the final quarter.
Jessi Parson and Mary Hooper scored the Lady Bears' only fourth quarter points, but there was no hope of a comeback for Berean. Kristian Moses scored 19 points, Parson finished with nine, Hooper netted six, and McKinnon managed five points for the Lady Bears.
