National Weather Service forecasters on Wednesday were tracking a winter storm that could produce problems for the area on Friday and Saturday. It's never easy predicting winter precipitation in East Tennessee, however it is expected some winter storm watches and warnings could be issued for the region as rain, sleet and perhaps snow accumulation all seem possible starting Friday and continuing through Saturday.
Forecasters said Wednesday, a developing storm system in Texas would be the culprit for winter weather. The storm system is expected to take a southern track through the Gulf Coast states. The amount and kind of precipitation the area receives could vary depending on the system's final track.
Local school officials said they are watching the weather, but as of early Wednesday afternoon no decision had been made about whether schools will close Friday. The potential for winter weather Friday has forced the area's high school basketball teams to move their games up from Friday night to Thursday night.
Sweetwater will travel to Sequoyah in a District 5-AA showdown with the girls' game scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. Tellico Plains will host Greenback at 6 p.m. as well. Thursday's game will also serve as Tellico Plains' homecoming. There has been no word on any schedule changes for this weekend's Monroe County Middle School Tournament, set to take place beginning Thursday night at Tellico Plains Junior High.
