In an action packed game from start to finish, the Hiwassee College mens' basketball team pulled out an 89-83 victory over visiting Bluefield College on Oct. 30. Hiwassee trailed most of the game, by as many as eight at one point in the second half, but was ahead at the end when it counted.
Bluefield College took the early momentum and, with bigger and taller players at every position, appeared on its way to an easy win. Hiwassee, however, kept alternating ball-handling duties between guards Derrick Bolden and Nick Hudson and forward Shondre Guest. Bolden and Hudson handled the outside and full-court pressure with their quickness, while Guest used his size to slash and drive toward the goal.
The first half closed with a flurry. Hiwassee fought hard to tie the game and gained possession with just a few seconds remaining. As the ball left his fingertips right before the buzzer, guard Daveon Rhyans hitting a 3-pointer to give Hiwassee a 37-34 halftime advantage.
The second half started with Bluefield College regaining and holding a sizeable lead. Things looked bad for the Tigers when head coach Darrian Jones was hit with a technical foul after Rodriquez Logan drove to basket and tumbled to the floor after hard contact and a no-call. Hiwassee, however, regained its composure and instead of falling further behind, started another run. In the final five minutes, both teams raised their level of play.
Each time Bluefield College hit a 3-pointer, Hiwassee's Bolden and Rhyans answered with 3-pointers of their own. Each time Bluefield had a fast break and scored on a layup, Hiwassee's Logan and McLaurin answered with layups of their own. Finally, Hiwassee College was the team on top with less than a minute remaining. Shondre Guest sealed the victory draining clutch free throws at the line.
