The Tellico Lake Tennis Association held its annual Fall Banquet Nov. 2 at the Tellico West Conference Center. President Fred Bonney gave an overview of the 2009 TLTA activities. These activities include socials, leagues, a weekend retreat, tournaments and implementing junior programs.
The TLTA is proud to have won state recognition for its contribution to the sport of tennis. Featured speaker for the event was Phil Campbell, author of Ready, Set, Go: Synergy Fitness for Time-Crunched Adults. The book illustrates the Sprint 8 method of getting fit using only three 20-minute workouts per week. The strategy promises to burn body fat, tone and build muscle and to have a healthier heart while maximizing exercise-induced growth hormones.
Jack Hall, TLTA board member, presented awards to Jim Jorgensen, B.J. Brinkley, Carol Williams, Kandie Shubeck, Mike Horn and Deb Swindlehurst for outstanding service to the organization. Betty Moore was presented the Volunteer of the Year Award and Fred Bonney the Ken Carlson Spirit Award.
Special recognition was given to Bob Ambler, captain of the 3.0 Senior Men's Team which won the USTA Tennessee Championship and will represent TLTA and Tennessee at the United State Tennis Association Sectionals Tournament in Alabama next March. Currently the Tri-Level women's league is playing on Tuesday nights and the World Team Tennis is playing on Thursday nights. Both these leagues will end the season before Thanksgiving. The annual T. Norman Mixed Doubles Tournament will be held at the Wellness Center courts on Nov. 8.
Jim Jorgensen is tournament director. Bob Ambler and Fred Bonney will be attending the USTA state league coordinators' meeting in Nashville later in November. Plans and rules and regulations for the 2010 leagues will be announced at this time. Membership in the Tellico Lake Tennis Association is open to all area tennis enthusiasts. The mission of the organization is to promote tennis in East Tennessee.
