Hiwassee College invites everyone in the community to come celebrate homecoming weekend at the college Nov. 13-15. This year's celebration is even more special with the college receiving accreditation status.
Saturday, Nov. 14, begins with the President's Welcome Reception at the Laycock Alumni Center on the Hiwassee campus at 9 a.m. Student-led tours of the Hiwassee campus and equestrian center will depart on the hour from the Rymer Student Center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Hiwassee's annual Alumni Awards Luncheon begins at noon in the Rymer Dining Hall. Cost is $15. The luncheon honors this year's Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, Jack Rhoton '64 of Johnson City, and Distinguished Community Service Award recipient, Judy Lee '52 of Madisonville.
This year's homecoming will also feature a reunion choir which is open to anyone who ever sang in a choral group at Hiwassee (choir, shalom, chorale, etc.). The group will perform at the luncheon on Saturday and other events during the weekend.
The Hiwassee Homecoming Parade through downtown Madisonville will be conducted on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The parade features floats by Hiwassee students and other area organizations and is led by the Sequoyah High School marching band. Student groups will also be decorating downtown business windows the week of homecoming.
A pre-game tailgate barbecue will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Rudy Youell Gymnasium. The cost is $5. The Lady Tigers basketball team will take on Alice Lloyd College at 5 p.m. and the Tigers basketball team takes the court against the men of Alice Lloyd at 7 p.m.
A Reunion Party for all Hiwassee College classes will be held Saturday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Grand Vista Hotel and Conference Center in Vonore. Alumni from all classes and their spouses or guests are invited to attend. The evening will feature a DJ with music, lights and dancing as well as light finger foods and beverages. Cost is $15 per person and covers the cost of the room, food and DJ. Please make a reservation to attend the party by calling (423) 420-1222.
