An Alcoa man viewed as a career criminal by the Monroe County Criminal Court received a 60-year sentence as the court closed out its October session.
James Alfred Reed Jr., 53, East Stephenson Street, is one of many who have been arrested for selling drugs within 1,000 feet of Vonore Elementary School in recent years, but so far he is the only one with an extensive criminal record dating back nearly two decades.
Judge Amy Reedy labeled Reed's career record "extensive" as she handed down the sentence for Reed's plea. Reed received 60 years for two convictions on sale and delivery of cocaine in a school zone. He also received $55,000 in fines. Court records show he must serve a minimum of 25 years before he can be considered for any kind of early release.
Court records show Reed has previous convictions for rape in Knox County in 1991, aggravated robbery in Blount County in 1995 and two convictions for sale and delivery of cocaine in Blount County in 2003.
Reed was arrested June 26, 2008, after Vonore Police Officers Kevin Osbourne and Robby Lovingood set up meetings with him on two separate occasions to buy a total of $300 in cocaine.
Marked currency and a recording device were used to solidify the case against Reed.
