Back in August, many pointed at the Week 10 meeting between the Sequoyah Chiefs and Sweetwater Wildcats as a potential factor in the race to secure a playoff berth. However, with the teams entering a combined 1-17, those hopes have been dashed. Instead, when the teams meet tonight, it's for nothing more than pride.
Fortunately, there's plenty of that on the line. The Chiefs have two motivating factors for picking up the win over the Wildcats. First, the Chiefs would avoid their first-ever winless season in the school's brief history. Sequoyah has won only one game in a season four times, most recently in 2005.
The Chiefs have only beaten Sweetwater once. That win came in 1999. But the Wildcats have plenty to play for as well. Not only would Sweetwater like to stretch its winning streak over Sequoyah, but Thursday is also Senior Night for the Wildcats. It will mark the final game for eight senior members of the Wildcats' football program. Both teams are coming off tough losses.
Sequoyah had a tough showing against Loudon last week in a 41-0 loss to the Redskins. Sweetwater experienced a gut-wrenching 7-6 loss to Notre Dame. Five starters missed the game against the Irish. Despite the records, the two teams appear to be evenly matched on both sides of the ball. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
