Wildcats suffer Homecoming heart-breaker, fall 7-6

Last week, the Sweetwater Wildcats took a disappointing loss that dropped them out of the playoff race.
On Friday night, the Cats suffered a disappointing loss that hurt their pride.
The Wildcats (1-8 overall, 1-2 District 5-AA) fell to the Notre Dame Fightin' Irish (3-6 overall) 7-6 in front of a large Homecoming crowd on a night when anything that could happen to each team seemingly did.

Both teams moved the ball well, but turnovers, penalties, and mental mistakes plagued each side until the final 7:25 of the game when the contest became an offensive explosion.
An opportunistic Wildcat defense recovered six Irish turnovers but none of those recoveries led to points.

Five Sweetwater starters missed Friday night's game due to injury, including quarterback Eli Arwood.
However, Gavyn Davis, who has split time with Arwood since returning from an injury a month ago, had a huge night.
The sophomore carried the ball 20 times for 39 yards while completing 13-of-25 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Davis, who also threw one interception, was good when it mattered as he was 9-of-12 passing in the second half for 86 yards.

Despite a few big runs, the Sweetwater defense kept the Notre Dame offense in check.
However, it was a pass completion midway through the fourth quarter that provided the winning points as the Irish connected for a 76 yard score.

The Cats showed some promise early, moving the ball 25 yards on the first three plays of the game.
However, on that third play, a Davis fumble was recovered by Notre Dame, ending the Sweetwater drive.
However, Davis made up for that turnover by recovering a fumble.

Sweetwater turned the ball over on downs on its next series, but again recovered a fumble, this time by Chris Hixson.
Neither team was able to gain any traction throughout the first quarter and the game was tied 0-0 after 12 minutes of play.

But teams continued their struggles offensively until late in the second quarter.
The Cats opened a drive with a 34-yard strike from Davis to freshman Tyler Wicker and followed with big runs by Dante Jonhkins.

However, the Cats settled for a 40-yard field goal attempt by Ross Houston - the first attempt of his career - but that kick was wide right, leaving the score 0-0 late in the quarter.
Sweetwater threatened to score again late in the half, but Notre Dame held its ground and the teams went into the locker room in a scoreless tie.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as neither team was able to gain control of the game.
However, the Wicker recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter that gave the Cats another scoring opportunity.
Sweetwater worked its way down to the Notre Dame 14 yard line before it had to settle for a 31-yard field goal attempt for Trent Walker.
Walker took over the kicking duties in the second half when Houston was injured in the first half.
However, a bad snap never allowed the kick to take flight and Walker was tackled for a nine-yard loss.
On the next play, Notre Dame scored on a 76-yard pass play and connected on the extra point to take a 7-0 lead with 7:25 to play in the game.

Behind the precision passing of Davis, Sweetwater quickly moved down the field and into scoring position.
The Cats looked to have cut the lead to a point when Davis hit Adam Worley with a 32-yard touchdown pass, but the play was nullified by offsetting pass interference penalties on Sweetwater and Notre Dame.

Two plays later, Davis hit Worley again for a 30-yard touchdown strike that counted but Walker's extra point was wide left, leaving the Cats down 7-6 with 2:52 to play.
Walker executed a perfect onside kick, which recovered by Wicker, and Sweetwater had one last chance to take the win.
The Wildcats moved the ball down to the Irish 36, but a fourth-and-8 pass from Davis was picked off and Notre Dame held on for the win.

Sweetwater wraps up its regular season at home on Thursday as archrival Sequoyah comes calling.

The game will mark the end of both teams' seasons and kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
