Drug 'Smurfs' arraigned

The "Smurfs" are starting to make their way through the Monroe County Court system.
The Smurfs were about 40 people who were rounded up Oct. 12 in "Operation: Gargamel," a reference to an old cartoon where little blue creatures were hunted by a wizard named Gargamel. Law enforcement used the title due to the practice of buying as many pseudoephedrine tablets as possible by as many people as possible is called "smurfing."

After the round up, which included many familiar names to law enforcement, the suspects were put into custody and arraigned by the Monroe County grand jury last week.
Those arraigned either had future court dates set or decided to plead guilty to the charges against them.

They included:
Cheatle Leonard Arwood Jr., 25, Anderson Road, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 25.

Glen Jerlyn Baxley, 42, County Road 409, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Edward Belcher, 38, Toomey Lane, Madisonville, three counts promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, four years suspended after 10 days.

Michael Bright, 52, White Plains Road, Vonore, two counts promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Heather Lynn Burris, 26, Laurel Creek Road, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, $2,000, four years suspended.

Wesley Ray Carmley, 31, Big Creek Road, Madisonville, three counts promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Toni Marie Carter, 38, Corntassel Road, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, three years suspended.

Kevin Lee Cook, 29, Cook Hollow Road, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Herbert Beerman Duncan, 43, Kincaid Road, Madisonville, two counts promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Dec. 8.

Olivia Ann Friedman, 27, Midhurst Road, Farragut, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, $2,000, two years suspended.

Virginia Lynn Gardner, 47, County Farm Road, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Matthew Shane Garrett, 23, Highway 411 South, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Don Wayne Giles, 41, Hooper Road, Tellico Plains, three counts promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Nov. 16.

Billy Ray Hampton, 49, Patterson Street, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Dec. 8.

Michael Craig Holcomb, 30, Graham Loop, Tellico Plains, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Dec. 8.

Sharon Denice Taylor, 41, Gamble Gap Road, Tellico Plains, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, $2,000, four years suspended.

Mark Alan Watson, 48, Manis Road, Madisonville, promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Dec. 8.

Nicky Lane Witt, 27, Turkey Creek Road, Tellico Plains, four counts promoting the manufacture of methamphetamine, status hearing Jan. 25.

Criminal Court pleas
Alex Cyphers, 18, Dawson Street, Vonore, four counts of vandalism between $500-$1,000, one year suspended, make restitution each count; vandalism between $1,000-$10,000, two years, make restitution; theft of property $1,000-$10,000, three years, make restitution.

David Lee Anderson, 23, Sunnyside Road, Philadelphia, driving on a revoked license, $150, six months suspended after 48 hours; evading arrest, two years suspended; violation of financial responsibility law, $100, 30 days suspended; reckless endangerment, two years suspended; leaving the scene of an accident with damage, six months suspended.

Kelsey Lea Daniels, 20, County Road 333, Niota, prescription fraud, $250, two years suspended.

Robert J. Dennison, 18, address unavailable, aggravated child abuse and neglect, eight years suspended, maintain counseling, comply with future recommendations and no contact with victim.

Geoffrey D. Lowe, 27, Old Niles Ferry Road, Greenback, violation of habitual motor vehicle offender, one year suspended.

Terry Sparks, 43, Mulberry Road, Maryville, driving on a revoked license, $60, six months suspended.
