The Advocate & Democrat will launch a new free publication, The Valley News, beginning Sunday, Nov. 1.
The Valley News will replace the PennySaver, which is currently delivered on the weekend. The Advocate & Democrat subscribers will continue to receive their Sunday paper as usual.
The Valley News will include articles and photos from The Advocate & Democrat's sister papers in Loudon, McMinn, Rhea and Meigs counties. It also will include the same advertisements and inserts usually included in The PennySaver and The Advocate & Democrat. The Valley News will be delivered to non-subscribers homes and will be available in racks in each town and various communities in the county.
The PennySaver was first launched in 1982 and included much of the same information that was in The Advocate & Democrat.
"Due to the changing economy and the cost of producing our Sunday paper, we can no longer afford to give away our local news free each week," said Editor & Publisher Mia Rhodarmer. "Those who want to receive local news on the weekend, must buy the paper from a rack or buy a subscription."
The Advocate & Democrat is available at 95 rack locations and a full list of locations will be featured on the back of The Valley News.
"For those who want to subscribe, we will be offering a discounted trial subscription throughout the month of November," said Rhodarmer.
The trial subscription will be $19.95 for four months. A Sunday only subscription also will be available for $34.
The Sunday edition of The Advocate & Democrat features local news, obituaries, letters to the editor, sports, community and church calendars, lifestyles, health care articles, comics and puzzles, school news, KidScoop, and many other community features.
The regular rate for a full-one year subscription is $59.
"If you buy the Sunday paper every weekend, that is $52 a year," said Rhodarmer. "For $7 more you will also receive the Tuesday and Thursday editions each week."
The Advocate & Democrat also offers an E-Z Pay subscription option that allows people to have $4.95 charged to their credit card or drafted from their checking account each month.
