The Monroe County Planning Commission voted at its Oct. 1 meeting to send a recommendation to the County Commission for approval of the new flood maps.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has updated flood maps throughout the county. Sweetwater approved its new maps at a meeting Oct. 5.
Staff planner Bart Hose said the maps are much better and were produced using digital tax maps and aerial photography.
Hose pointed out the flood zones did not change, but the maps better reflect the zones now. The county's Flood Plain Management regulations were also updated to correspond with the changes on the maps.
"Everybody benefitted because it's way more accurate," said Planning Commission Chairman Bill Howe.
The county must adopt the new maps to continue its participation in the National Flood Insurance program.
Hose said with the county participating in the National Flood Insurance program, even people who do not live in the designated flood zones can buy flood insurance. For instance, people who live in low-lying areas prone to flooding when there is a lot of rain, could buy insurance for their homes and property.
The County Commission will hold a public hearing on the new maps at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24 at the Courthouse. The new maps will go into effect Feb. 3 and are available for inspection at the county planning office at the Courthouse.
