The last couple of seasons, Monroe County softball teams have enjoyed considerable success. Sweetwater has won two consecutive regular season district titles and advanced to two straight region tournaments.
Tellico Plains has piled up wins and competed heavily with the district's top teams. Sequoyah has seen its share of struggles, but has also pulled off a few upsets. But one thing all three teams have in common is their roster will have a completely different look next season.
Here is a look back at the three teams seasons and a look forward to next season. Sequoyah Look back: The Lady Chiefs' record is somewhat deceiving as the team suffered quite a bit of heartbreak last season. There were plenty of occasions where an error, bad bounce, or unfortunate call flipped Sequoyah's chances at winning.
However, the Lady Chiefs came around towards the end of the season and collecting a couple of wins and putting a scare in some district opponents. Look ahead: Sequoyah had a senior-heavy team this season, meaning several holes will need to be plugged next season.
Replacing leadoff hitter and center fielder Beth McGowan, as well as catcher/pitcher Jessica Coleman will be two huge tasks for the Lady Chiefs. However, Peyton Maxwell returns and should be a mainstay in the circle. Oceana Richards made huge strides this season and could be a weapon, as well as Brittany Watson and Ashley Rodgers.
Sweetwater Look back: The Lady Wildcats were on pace for perhaps the best season in school history when they ran into Chattanooga Christian and Jennifer Long in the Region 3-AA semi-finals. A 1-0 loss to the Lady Chargers ended the Lady Cats' season prematurely. However, Sweetwater captured another district title and were ranked among the top three teams in the state for most of the season, with brief stays at No. 1.
Look ahead: Sweetwater head coach Eric Weaver earned Coach of the Year recognition this past season, and for the Lady Cats to repeat as district champions, he'll probably have to earn that award again next year.
There's plenty of talent returning with Emily Crush, Andrea Adams, Beth Breeden, and Paige Hicks. But losing players such as Kayla Kerns, Ashley Miller, and Chelsea Schultz is always a big blow. With Kerns and Miller gone, the big question is who will take over in the circle?
Whoever becomes the ace will be without much, if any, varsity experience. Kerns and Miller gave Sweetwater a chance to win every game this year with their pitching.
Without a known dominant pitcher, the Lady Cats might have to rely on their offense more than they have the last couple of years.
Tellico Plains Look back: The Lady Bears got off to a hot start, cooled off in the middle of the season, and started to come alive towards the end of the year.
A loss to Boyd Buchanan in the district quarterfinals ended their season. Tellico had an up-and-down year, hanging tough with some opponents and having a meltdown in other games.
Look ahead: Tellico should benefit from a move down in classification to District 3-A. Perennial power Midway will also be a member of that district, but the Lady Bears should challenge the Lady Waves for a district title. Tellico must replace a few top-notch players, including pitcher Jessica Chaney.
But the team has the pieces to be very competitive and moving out of ultra-competitive District 5-AA should only help the Lady Bears add more wins to their record.
