The Vonore Fire Department was one of many departments around the country selected to receive monetary support from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program; a federal program that will award close to $500 million to fire departments across the nation during this fiscal year. The announcement was made on Aug. 1 by Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. that the Vonore fire fighters would be given $11,970 to spend on equipment, training, protective gear, and modifications of their facilities.
“Most of the grant money is going to be spent on high-diameter hoses and hydrant connectors,” said Vonore Fire Chief Steve Wheeler. “These are low-friction loss hoses. They are much more efficient than normal hoses. It is kind of like having a moving fire hydrant.”
In a statement from his office, Duncan said, “I am pleased that the Vonore Volunteer Fire Department has been chosen to receive such an important grant. This investment will help ensure that the Department can continue to protect the health and safety of its volunteers and the citizens in Monroe County.”
