Garden Club learns about ‘Berries in Your Yard’

Published: 8:59 AM, 07/28/2008

The Sequoyah Trail Garden Club met at the home of Lauren Smithandrews.  Nelda Breeden led the devotion titled, “My Garden.”  The program, Berries In Your Yard, was presented by Georgia Schley.
Georgia talked about strawberries, blueberries and blackberries.  Tennessee Beauty strawberries are ever-bearing and bear the most and largest fruit.  Rabbit Eye blueberries do very well in Tennessee’s clay soil, freeze well, but take three to five years to produce berries.  Blackberries are not hurt by a spring frost.

Elizabeth Harris read the minutes and Nelda Breeden gave the treasurer’s report.  The club conducted a flower arranging workshop for the Monroe Area Boys & Girls Club on July 15.  Nelda Breeden, Georgia Schley, Lauren Smithandrews and Emma Tate assisted Lynda Plemons with Garden Therapy at East Tennessee Health Care Facility helping 15 residents make flower arrangements for their dining room.
A flower arrangement was brought by Elizabeth Harris.  Horticulture was brought by Pat Bohannon, Nelda Breeden, Sandy Dykes, Elizabeth Harris, Lynda Plemons and Lauren Smithandrews. The meeting adjourned and everyone enjoyed dessert.   The next meeting will be the club’s annual breakfast meeting at Jean Black’s home.
