(Last modified: 2009-07-03 08:30:01) New Sweetwater Mayor Doyle Lowe, City Commissioners Bill Stockton and Julian Walton and Board of Education members Janie Dacus and Bennie Moser took the oath of office Wednesday at City Hall.
A large crowd of family, friends and well wishers watched outgoing Mayor Jim Stutts swear in the June 11 election winners. "This is an important day in the life of our community," Stutts said before administering the oath. Lowe thanked Stutts for all his efforts to make the transition of power as smooth as possible. Lowe said he has formed a good relationship with the commissioners and City Recorder Jessica Morgan and he thanked people for coming to the ceremony. Stockton has been a commissioner for more than 12 years, however Walton is a newcomer to the commission. He expects to be named commissioner over the Parks and Recreation Department. "I am excited about getting started," he said. Walton said he plans to have the city's Recreation Commission take a more active role leading progress for the recreation system and thinks that board could handle many problems before they have to come before the City Commission. Dacus and Moser have years of experience on the School Board. They were unopposed in the June election. The new Sweetwater Mayor and Board of Commissioners will meet Monday in regular session at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The mayor and commissioners will have several appointments to various boards to consider in the coming days. tommy.millsaps@advocateanddemocrat.com | 337-7101 Copyright © 2009, The Advocate and Democrat |
