(Last modified: 2009-06-10 09:30:02) For the third consecutive year, the Champions Training for Success Football Camp will be returning to the Sweetwater Recreation Complex.
The camp, designed for football players of all skill levels, gives players in the area a unique chance to work with several well-known players. The camp leaders include Clyde Rudolph, a former standout at the University of Kentucky, former University of Tennessee and Sweetwater great Terrence Cleveland, and Sam Brown, who also starred at Sweetwater and the University of Louisville. The camp has also brought in former UT and NFL stars such as Eric Westmorland, who played for the 1998 national championship team, Harry Galbreath, Bruce Wilkerson, Reggie Cobb, and Terry McDaniel. Atlanta Falcons assistant coach Gerald Brown was a new face at the camp last season before helping the team advance to the NFL Playoffs where they lost to eventual NFC Champion Arizona in the first round. Brown is the Falcons running backs coach. Brown's offensive backfield included Michael Turner, who gained 1,699 yards in the regular seasons and was good enough for the second-best total in the NFL. The camp will be broken up into two sessions. The first will be June 22 and 23 with players ages 6-12 receiving instruction. The cost for this group will be $75 per player. The second group will attend camp June 24-26 and is for players ages 13 and up. The cost for this age division is $125 per player. All ages receive instruction at their specific positions. Instead of everyone running through the same drills no matter their position like at some camps, the linemen concentrate on lineman-specific drills while the backs and receivers go through drills designed for their positions. There are also periods devoted to conditioning and agility drills to help the players improve their speed, footwork, and conditioning throughout the week. The timing fits in perfectly for high school athletes in the area, as the camp coincides with the first week of the TSSAA dead period, during which no player may use school facilities for weight training and conditioning or have any weight lifting or conditioning sessions with members of their school's coaching staff. The intense agility and conditioning drills give the high school players a chance to keep up with their conditioning during at least one of the two-week dead period. One early registration date has already passed, but there will be another chance to register early for the camps on June 12 from 4-7 p.m. at the Sweetwater Recreation Center. There will also be opportunities to register for the camps on the day of the camp for the player's age group.
