According to Sweetwater Police, Wendy Walker, 31, Old Highway 68, Sweetwater, was handling funds from concession stand sales but the softball club discovered the money was not going where it was supposed to go. “The club had good records and procedures,” SPD Chief Eddie Byrum said. The police chief said the club was able to identify the problem and reported it to SPD. Detective John Scruggs took over the investigation. He said Walker took about $2,200 in cash that was supposed to be put in the bank from concession sales last month. Scruggs said the suspect also wrote checks on the club account and took the money. The detective said Walker finally admitted to taking the money. She stands charged with theft over $1,000. Scruggs said it took some time for the suspect to come clean but she turned herself in at the Monroe County Jail Thursday. tommy.millsaps@advocateanddemocrat | 337-7101.
